After a disappointing fourth-place finish at the FIBA Basketball World Cup, USA Basketball looks to reassert its dominance at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.

Despite failing to medal, Team USA, which was led by Anthony Edwards, Austin Reaves, Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson, earned a berth in the Olympics by finishing as one of the top two teams in the Americas region.

The roster, for the first time, was constructed by new managing director Grant Hill. Steve Kerr (Golden State) took over from Gregg Popovich as head coach and was assisted by Erik Spoelstra (Miami), Tyronn Lue (LA Clippers) and Mark Few (Gonzaga).

Hill and Co. look to bounce back next year. The group has already started configuring the roster and appears to have received some assistance from future Hall of Famer LeBron James, who has joined the recruiting efforts.

James reportedly began reaching out to other star players in the NBA this past summer prior to Team USA competing in the FIBA Basketball World Cup. Hehas privately agreed to play next year and has secured commitments from several others.

Here is a look at where Team USA stands ahead of the start of the NBA season.

Shortly after Team USA lost to Canada in the third-place game at the FIBA Basketball World Cup, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that James was ready to commit to playing in Paris next year.

He addressed the report at media day.

“I do have a lot of interest in playing in Paris,” James told Dave McMenamin of ESPN. “There is a lot to be had here with the Lakers, obviously, in this season. I got a lot of interest in playing in Paris with Team USA. I have a history of playing with Team USA, obviously, everyone knows that. We have a lot of great players here in America.”

Of course, James’ upcoming season with the Lakers will likely dictate his playing status next summer in the Olympics. However, James has been actively recruiting other star players to suit up for the United States, as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer said.

“We’ve been in communication,” James said.

With James playing recruiter, combined with his strong interest in suiting up one more time in the Olympics, it appears as though the two-time gold medalist will be playing in Paris.

Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers

The reigning NBA Most Valuable Player confirmed this week at training camp with the 76ers that he has committed to playing with Team USA in the 2024 Olympic Games.

Embiid was born in Cameroon and holds citizenship in France and the United States. He contemplated playing for each country next year, but eventually settled on the U.S. after talking to officials from each federation recently.

I’m really proud and excited about this decision. It was not easy. I am blessed to call Cameroon, France, and the USA home. After talking to my family, I knew it had to be Team USA. Durant, a four-time gold medalist, announced at media day with the Suns that he had committed to playing with Team USA next year, which will be his fourth time playing in the Olympics.

“I will play in the Olympics next year,” Durant said.

The former Most Valuable Player led the U.S. to the gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics, averaging 20.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists in six games.

Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors

Curry, who confirmed at Warriors media day this week his interest in suiting up in the red, white and blue, appears to be on track to play in his first Olympic Games.

“I talked to some people about the opportunity, and definitely, if all things stay the same, I want to be playing,” Curry said, via Tommy Call III of Warriors Wire. “It’s the one thing I haven’t done. I also understand the opportunity for Team USA to kind of reassert themselves as the most dominant in the world and all that type of stuff. I definitely want to be there — definitely want to be on the team. Hopefully, things line up that way where we’re all there.”

Curry has only played with the senior team in the 2010 FIBA World Championship and the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. He averaged 10.7 points, 2.9 assists and 2.8 rebounds in 2014.

Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics

The four-time NBA All-Star with the Celtics joined James, Embiid, Durant and Curry this week in confirming his interest in playing with USA Basketball in the Olympics.

“I won a gold medal already, and I’d love to go back and do it again,” Tatum said.

Tatum was a part of the team that won the gold medal its last time out in Tokyo, averaging 15.2 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists in six games. He suited up in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup and three times with the junior team.

Adebayo was also a part of the team that won the gold medal in 2021, averaging 6.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.2 blocks in six games. It was his first international event with USA Basketball.
